1946
In September 1946, the company “Montoli Vincenzo e Figli” is officially registered, the company that today everyone knows as Brevetti Montolit SpA.
From the passion and dedication of Vincenzo Montoli (Varese, 1892), a new business reality is born, establishing itself in Italy by specializing in the cutting tools sector: scissors and shears suitable for different uses.
1948
On January 28, 1946, the first official patent is filed and subsequently approved in June 1948 by the Ministry of Industry and Commerce.
Through research and development, Vincenzo Montoli e Figli succeeds in transforming innovative ideas into a concrete and successful reality. The first patent was applied to special curved-blade shears designed for cutting plaster.
1954
In the early 1950s, the company shifts its focus toward new horizons. The idea for a new machine is born, suitable for cutting materials used in construction, such as stone tiles, marble, and roof tiles.
This marks the beginning of the project for the first tile cutter, which would later make the company famous worldwide, exporting Made in Italy craftsmanship from the Varese area.
1960
The early 1960s are fundamental for the Montoli family, as the first true production plant is established in Cantello (VA) on Via Turconi (current registered office).
This change becomes necessary due to the company’s international expansion, requiring space suitable for a much larger production activity.
1974
A pivotal year for the company, marked by the opening of the second production plant, also located in Cantello, reinforcing the strong bond with its home territory.
The new facility is larger and more modern, designed to meet the demands of ongoing innovation.
1978
The company changes its corporate name, combining the family surname “Montoli” with “Italia”, highlighting the importance of family values and Made in Italy.
The term “Brevetti”, which has distinguished the company since its origins, is retained, giving rise to Brevetti Montolit SpA.
1980
The company continues to focus on tile cutters, which have become its core business, evolving through new models and solutions.
At the same time, the market evolves with the introduction of increasingly hard materials, creating a growing demand for advanced cutting solutions.
Montolit successfully provides technical and professional solutions also in the diamond tools sector, distinguishing itself from the outset through pioneering innovations and revolutionary technologies based on targeted research and development.
The use of diamond tools also leads to the creation of the first electric machines for cutting and drilling new materials.
1984
At a European level, the company receives the “Golden Mercury” (Mercurio d’Oro) award, a highly prestigious recognition established in 1949 to promote excellence, commercial integrity, entrepreneurial spirit, and professional reliability within the Italian production system.
1989
The company is awarded the “Golden Hercules” (Ercole d’Oro) prize, granted to companies and individuals distinguished by innovation and contributions to the country’s economic well-being. The award ceremony takes place at the Capitoline Hill in Rome.
Year 90
The 1990s are a crucial decade for the company. Montolit further strengthens its position in the rapidly expanding diamond tools market, ranging from milling cutters and blades to various specialized tools, and participates in major international trade fairs (e.g. Batimat, Cersaie, Coverings, MCE).
These are also the years in which the tiling industry undergoes a major transformation with the introduction of porcelain stoneware. Montolit adapts perfectly to this innovation by developing lightweight, practical, precise, and fast manual machines, standing out on the market for its highly effective push scoring system.
In 1996, Brevetti Montolit is awarded the “Grand Cross for Merit in Construction”.
2006
The third Montolit operational headquarters is inaugurated, located opposite the current production facility. This modern space is partly dedicated to hosting customers from all over the world and to organizing events and meetings for partners and clients, thanks to its internal showroom.
The company museum is one of the most appreciated highlights.
2016
A very important year marking the celebration of 70 years of history. To commemorate this extraordinary milestone, the access road to the facility is dedicated to the founder Cav. Vincenzo Montoli.
Alongside his legacy, the company continues to focus strongly on research and development of new products and solutions for professional tile installers.
2022
Montolit is officially registered in the Special Register of Historic Trademarks of Significant Interest, a public Italian register created to enhance, protect, and promote companies with a significant Made in Italy heritage.
2023
The company publishes its first Sustainability Report, highlighting its economic and cultural commitment to environmental protection, employees, and suppliers/customers.
At the same time, the Masterpiuma P5 is launched on the market: a professional manual machine representing the modern evolution of the historic tile cutter that made the company famous worldwide.
2024
Montolit’s history and successes gain international recognition. As a result, Lifco AB (a Swedish publicly listed industrial holding company) takes interest in the Varese-based company and decides to establish a strategic partnership to ensure an even brighter future.
2025
The company continues to promote cutting-edge products and solutions designed to meet the dynamic needs of the ceramic market.
In line with the growing trend toward large-format tiles, Montolit develops and introduces dedicated technologies for processing, handling, and finishing porcelain slabs and similar materials.
This technical evolution reflects the historical values and ideals passed down through three generations of the Montoli family.
Today, more than ever, the company’s objective remains continuous improvement and the highest product quality.
2026
“The future of Brevetti Montolit is still waiting to be discovered, but we are certain that we will not leave you without the surprises and innovations you have come to appreciate over these incredible 80 years of history…”
